The best waterfalls near Blue Ridge, Georgia are Amicalola Falls, the tallest waterfall in Georgia at 729 feet; Long Creek Falls, a two-tiered cascade on the Appalachian Trail; Helton Creek Falls, a pair of falls on an easy 0.3-mile trail; and Sea Creek Falls, a 30-foot fall just minutes from the parking area. Amicalola Falls
Amicalola Falls drops 729 feet, making it the tallest waterfall in Georgia and one of the state's Seven Natural Wonders. The name comes from a Cherokee word often translated as "tumbling waters." The state park has viewing areas you can reach with little walking, plus a long staircase up the side of the falls for a real workout. The park is also the start of the approach trail to Springer Mountain, the southern end of the Appalachian Trail.
Good for: everyone. There are options for every fitness level. A Georgia State Parks parking fee applies.
Long Creek Falls
One of our favorite hikes. From the Three Forks trailhead on Forest Service Road 58, follow the white-blazed Appalachian Trail, which shares the path with the Benton MacKaye Trail here, for roughly 0.8 miles, then take the short blue-blazed side trail to the falls. It is a beautiful drive to get there, then about an hour of hiking there and back, with several smaller cascades along the way.
Tip: The last stretch of road is gravel. Take it slow, and download your map ahead of time since cell service is spotty.
Helton Creek Falls
A double waterfall on a short, easy trail, which makes it perfect for beginners and families. The trail reaches the lower falls first and the upper falls just beyond, with more than 100 feet of total drop between them. The pool at the base is a popular summer wading spot.
Tip: The rocks here are very slippery. Keep kids close and wear shoes with good grip.
Sea Creek Falls
A peaceful 30-foot fall that spills into a shallow pool. The walk is short and easy, but the drive in includes a gravel road. It pairs well with a scenic drive through the Cooper Creek area.
Bonus: Fall Branch Falls
If you want a waterfall close to downtown Blue Ridge, Fall Branch Falls near the Aska Adventure Area has a 30-foot upper plunge. The trail is a bit more strenuous than Long Creek, so wear real hiking shoes.
Waterfall safety tips
- Stay on marked trails and never climb on the falls. Wet rock and moss are extremely slippery.
- Download maps before you leave. Cell service is limited in the national forest.
- Bring water, snacks, and a light layer. Mountain weather changes quickly.
- After heavy rain, creeks rise fast and gravel roads can wash out.
- Pack out everything you bring in.
